Mentoring
My path has been made possible by the generous, generative commitments of so many more people than I can list here*. So I approach mentorship as a way to build the worlds we want to see.
In that vein, if you have questions about shaping your academic/professional trajectory and are seeking mentorship, please reach out via email at kim.fernandes@utoronto.ca. In your email, please list
The areas in which you’re seeking mentorship (e.g., applying to graduate school, navigating academic job market applications, etc.)
Why you’re reaching out to me specifically (e.g., similar research interests, shared geographical interests, etc.)
What you think I’d be able to help you with (e.g., sharing resources on drafting application materials, questions about where to look for jobs, etc.)
The information you provide in your email does not have to be long or extensive -- when reading and responding to emails, I first look to determine if I can provide support in ways that are useful to you, or if I can connect you with others who might be better able to answer your questions. I prioritize mentoring students from marginalized backgrounds but aim to respond to everyone who reaches out to me. If you reach out and do not hear back, please do not hesitate to follow up.
*Though far from a full list, I am always happy and honored to share my dissertation acknowledgments, which are a partial attempt to trace the many ways people have made this journey with me. Please feel free to write me if you’re curious!
